The Vertical View was established by Paul Gilmour, an electronic engineer with a passion for photography, videography and flight. In 2011 Paul decided to design and build a Remotely Piloted Aircraft that could carry a camera to take footage of an inaccessible island on the Firth of Clyde.
Out of this project The Vertical View was born.

Director and Pilot
With a background in Field Engineering within the electronics industry, Paul has worked in Japan, Europe and the US on medium to large scale projects with Nikon Precision Europe, Sercel and Amey Infrastructure services. Paul maintains a high degree of professionalism and attention to detail, so that your project will be completed on time, safely and to the highest quality standards. On his journeys, Paul has filmed and photographed some of the world’s most precious sights, which in turn led him to follow his passions and create: The Vertical View.
Denise is a scientist and educator with a passion for nature and its interaction with our senses. Drawing upon her love of nature has taken Denise on many journeys through the US to find culture, history and nature at its best, capturing the detail and depth of emotion in a scene in the most natural way.
Jim is a well-travelled guy with a no nonsense attitude to safe systems of work. He is an engineer who has held positions with GSK and ESCOM in South Africa. Focussing intently on the safe application of drone technology, Jim ensures that the day to day operations are carried out successfully and without incident.
Our principle flight system, the S1000+ is an advanced eight rotor aircraft that’s capable of carrying heavy DSLR’s. We use the Panasonic GH4 with an Olympus M.Zuiko ED 12mm f/2 lens, to deliver up to 4k cinema quality footage and 16Mp photos. The camera is stabilised on a three axis Z15 gimbal to ensure the best stability available.
Flight is controlled by the A2 flight computer which has a GPS system accurate to less than 1.5m and boasts motor failure protection of up to 25%. Coupled with signal loss and battery level protection, this is one of the safest systems available on the market and is ideally suited to applications where high quality footage, in higher risk locations are required.
The Phantom 4 is our wee work horse. It’s a small sub 7kg system that fits neatly into a pack that can be carried to any location. It can deliver great 4k footage and 12Mp stills with ease. Its quick, easy to deploy nature means that we can “run and gun” super-fast, capturing moments with minimal set up time.
With a high degree of reliability, mostly due to its advanced controls and simplicity, it’s a fantastic choice for action shots where short notice to deliver great results with minimal post production are required.
